Littlewoods catalogue debt

I have two Kays accounts and have been running these perfectly for the past 4 years. Last week I placed an order that was rejected and after enquiring why was told that I had an outstanding debt with Littlewoods (now part of the Kays group) and until this was paid my accounts were frozen. I did not know what they were talking about as a previous debt with Littlewoods had been settled and I provided proof of this. However their credit department rang me today to say that this was not the debt they were chasing but another one coincidently for the same amount £190. They said that it originated in 1999 and had received regular payments up until sometime in 2000. I queried why no one had contacted me as I have been at the same address for the past 11 years and was told that they did not know but it was still showing on their internal bookeeping accounts and unless I paid £90 today my Kays accounts would be frozen as 'payment only'. I therefore paid £90.00 and my Kays accounts have returned to normal. On reflection though can they still chase a debt from that far back and shouldn't they have given me some written proof of the details of the debt?

I thought that if it was over 6 years ago it is written off, but I am sure someone else will come along and confirmDFW no.630!

Companys can not enforce debt over 6 years through the courts but they are still legally able to chase it and by-pass the courts such as freeze account, instruct baliffs or put a detachment of earnings order on your wages.
Hope this helps0 -
Is This Even If It Is Statute Barred??0

Unfortunately by paying it, you have reinstated their right to collect it.If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0

Unfortunately they had me over a barrel because if I didn't pay then I would be frozen out from any of their affiliated companies which is every catalogue going!
Thanks for everyones comments, much appreciated.

Hi, how about asking for a signed credit agreement and list of transactions that enable them to enforce the debt - bet they can't supply it0
