PS, And I will probably be back in the same store in the next few days and even buy a Hovis loaf if it's fresh. But if it's not, perhaps I should seek out the Manager next time.
Your post #1 says you asked the assistant to read out the words on the package - which immediately indicates you where rude and arrogant.
You also said that he "Keep repeating" his answer that they where entitled to sell them at full price - which indicates you refused to accept his perfectly correct answer , and you where repeating the same (incorrect) questioning information that its shoudnt be on sale at full price .
Sounds to me as if you where trying to belittle the assistant by saying he didnt know his job - and you did.0 -
If I had an issue I felt this strongly about I would ask to discuss it with a Manager, rather than argue with the staff on the shop floor . Feedback is best passed directly to them.Handing back the apples was rather petulant ,and over-the-top, imho.0

The replies you got are based on the description of the situation you gave. You described "retorting" (usually meaning quick, witty or angry response, and it wasn't the former), and the shop assistant's responses as "all he coud keep repeating" suggesting you were badgering him.
So, assuming you were simply trying to exaggerate your exchange for (un)comic effect and simply had a pleasant discussion, were you right in not buying the bread and apples?
Only you can answer that really. It depends on how much you wanted the bread and apples and if it was worth it to you to forgo them or find another shop. Either way I don't think it'll make it to dilemma of the week, even by MSE's standards, although it might get an award for the longest thread about a loaf of bread.
Personally I wouldn't buy bread with a best before of that day unless it was reduced (a candidate for freezing or perhaps a bread and butter pudding), or there were no alternatives that I would consider. So in your case, given you were presumably unhappy with the alternatives, I would have bought it and frozen whatever I didn't use over the next couple of days.0 -

of course you did! Your story was the real version of events. Now your receiving a backlash your backtracking and painting it as a delightful and pleasant conversation.Even a stopped clock tells the right time twice a day, and for once I'm inclined to believe Withnail is right. We are indeed drifting into the arena of the unwell.0 -

Did I do the right thing?
Yes you did the right thing, you musn't leave the shop without paying, so handing them back was good.0 -
this is rude and belittling
It's also something that someone would only do when they know the person has to comply or risk getting a complaint put in about them.
I suppose it's acceptable treating another person like rubbish because a shop they work in didn't have any bread that you wanted to buy.0 -

But is was Lidl that committed the first mistake.
The OP would never have ventured into Tesco if Lidl had the goods he wanted.
So the OP moans about Tesco - how strange.0 -
Actually, I think the OP is right - selling something after its "Best before" date is a bit shabby.
However, I wouldn't have expected a general member of staff to have been asked to deal with it.
Me, I go to the store and if things are on a short date then I generally buy something else.0
