Shop assistants really earn every penny they receive.

Especially when having to deal with self important entitled windbags like the OP appears to be ..

The OP seems to be getting some stick here! I will not comment on their behaviour, but I do think Tesco and other stores need to get their marketing/ sales pattern improved.

If the OP is correct and they had numerous loaves with a best before date of the current date, then I think their stock control and ordering needs looking at.

I personally am sick of my weekly sifting through the bread in my Sainsburys to find the one with the latest date, to add insult to injury the brand I like is always on the bottom shelf which entails me almost sitting on the floor.

I find my local Sainsbury's is particularly bad when it comes to stock control. Half of their bread really ought to be reduced to clear. Then they could get in some fresh stock.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

I handed him the Gala Apples I was also going to buy, and left the shop.

Did I do the right thing?
If you changed you mind and decided you didn't want the gala apples or the bread, then yes you did the right thing in not buying them.

I'm not sure why you want that confirming, but I hope it helps.

I'm interested to know what Lidl's response was when you chastised them for no longer selling what you wanted to buy.

Whilst it might have been nice to have had a reduction, I think you lost out. You wanted the bread, you couldn't get it in Lidl, you could get it in Tesco - but didn't. You went without, over a 'date' - doh.
I wonder why, the assistant didn't give you an idea when 'reductions' may start - was it something you said, or the way you said it?

Yes, I love reductions,(curious how seldom Lidl do them), and because of that I know that even a dated reduced loaf will last four or five days - much longer if it's in the freezer.

I am with the OP, in the fact I wouldn't buy bread with a best before date of the day of purchase.

I would have just left it at that though

Deciding not to buy the product isnt the issue here. Its the OPs reaction .
I am waiting for the OPs story of how they went back to the store today to apologise to the store assistant.

You will be waiting a very long time then. As I said in post #4 "I was neither rude not obnoxious. I was perfectly pleasant to him".

I called over an assistant and asked him to read the date, which he did. "What about the words before the date?" I asked, and he read out "Best before"!

"Exactly," I retorted. "They are all best before today, it's ok up to yesterday. Do you have any fresher loaves or why aren't these reduced?
You call that being perfectly pleasant?

Why could you not just ask if they had any fresher bread rather than belittling the assistant with an inquisition.
