Advice please

I hope his is the right thread If it's not then please feel free to tell me where I can get advice..
My DD is 4 she has been dry during the day for about 18mths, and recentally got her dry at night after a relapse.
She has been for sometime wetting through the day. I was unsure at first if it was lazyness but overtime have been unsure as to the cause, basically she seems to be wetting alot, all of a sudden she needs to go and wee's such a little amount and semms shocked she needed to go, i was sure she had an infection. The doctor tested her and it came back negative for infection.
To cut a long story short he decided she needed a medication called Amitriptiline, I've looked this medication up and firstly it is prescribed as an anti deppression, but also can be prescribed for bed wetting in 7-10 yr olds.
As my daughter is only 4 and I'm not 2005 sure what the doctors aims of giving her this medication are, I'm not sure what to do!!! I'm just not sure if deppression meds is appropiate even if it does help bed wetting , I don't feel like hes looked into it enough to give this meds...
I'm sure I'm babbleing now so anyone with any advice..
Thanks in advance.

  • i WOULDNT RECOMMEND TABLETS FOR A FOUR YEAR OLD, MY SON WAS WETTING THE BED AND HE WAS 9. WE EVENTUALLY FOUND OUT HE WAS STRESSED AT SCHOOL, AND HIS BEHAVIOUR ALSO WAS APPAULING. TO CUT A LONG STORY SHORT BY USING A BUZZER MATTRESS AS RECOMMENDED BY THE HEALTH VISITOR AND KEEP REASURING HIM HE HAS EVENTUALLY MANAGED TO CONTROL HIS BLADDER DURING THE NIGHT.

HE ALSO SAID IT WAS BECAUSE HE WAS A HEAVY SLEEPER AND WOULD OFTEN DREAM HE WAS ON THE TOILET WHEN HE WASNT.

    HOPE THIS HELPS

I can't believe a GP is prescribing a medicine meant for 7-10 year olds for a 4 year old  . If it was me I wouldn't be giving it to her and would go and see another doctor in the practise, saying you are worried that this medicine is for 7-10 year olds and could he explain how an anti-depressant works for this problem.

Has there been a change or upset to her routine or make her feel insecure that could have caused her to start wetting again? Something happening at nursery perhaps? A new baby?

    Hi sallylizzie!
Amitriptyline is an ad as you say hun but I'm on due to severe IBS & food allergy reactions. However I'm 42.:o
I think it's always better to be safe than sorry & if I were you hun, I'd see a different gp at the practice if they have one & if not, then certainly question the gp you saw about it. I wouldn't be happy about it.
Another source you can ask is your chemist - or any chemist. Just phone them ask to speak to the chemist , say you've got however much of Amitriptyline which has been prescribed for a 4 year old & is it safe.;)

DS was still nightwetting at 5 for a while & it was because he was such heavy sleeper. When we were living in Las Vegas, we had an earthquake & he slept through it! A sign of things to come. ;)

Never be afraid to ask questions hun - it may mean a matter of life or death one day. Good luck hun.
    Much Love,

  • Hi I wanted to say thank you to those who replied to my post. I spoke to he chemist and he told me that the dose DD had been prescribed was too large for her age but the actual prescription was fine, but tbh I can't get my head around the fact that it is also used as an anti deppresient, therefore I'm going back for a 2nd opinion.

Also I want to add the chemist seemed rather surprised this was prescribed by a GP as opposed to a specialist.. jus comfirming my fears she shouldn't have been given it.

Thank you again all for your advice.

Ps... Nothing has changed in DD life to warrent her wetting, no new bb she's been going to the same nursery for 18mths she ADORES going and is very happy there, I'm just puzzled by it all. I'm really torn by it all unsure of the cause it's been going on for months now!!!!
I'm getting a bit desperate to get to the bottom of it all!!!!!!!
If you come up with any ideas pls let me know!! lol

  • Hi Sallylizzie,
OMG your life sounds like a exact replica of mine!! My 3 year old DD was totally potty trained for 6 months, we even did it in a week!! Just after she turned three she started wetting again ALL THE TIME!! This has been going on for nearly three months now, I've taken a sample like you to drs but came back clear. It's like she doesn't care, when she's wet she's quite happy to stay like that all day, but the problem is it really smells. I'm going out of my mind, majorly stressed and feel like I scream at her all the time now, even though I know I shouldn't.
I've tried everything, ignoring it, changing her but not saying anything, shouting at her, reward charts, taking things away from her when she does it, making her sit in it, giving her a sweet everytime she goes on the potty or toilet.
She did move rooms in nursery which upset her a little and I think this may have triggered it all, but she's really happy now. What concerns me the most is that she is just not bothered, whereas I am going crazy!
    Thanks, poops

I really hate to say this but... I'm glad someone else is going through it too!!!!
I'm going out of my mind, I to have tried everything but nothings working, the only difference it DD isn't happy to stay like it, sometimes changes herself and I only know when I find the wet pants on the floor, she only seems to wee a little amount like she's not able to hold her bladder at all.
I totally understand your frustration cos I feel it too.
All I can say is good luck and feel free to pm if you like!!!!
  • Thanks for your support, my DD can't seem to hold on either, if she has a big drink, 20 mins later she will do about 4 or 5 wees in the space of 20 mins. I had an appt at gps on Monday after speaking to health visitor the Friday before, who suggested taking the sample in, but I really couldn't justify taking up the drs time for something like this. Like you, I wouldn't be too concerned but she was totally dry for 6 months previously and could hold on with no dribbles.
Will keep you updated, going to ring drs on Monday.

It is worth saying that amitryptiline is prescribed for a number of things as well as an antidepressant.

It is always worth talking to your HV about this sort of thing as well, if you haven't already done so. However, once you've done that and worked through any advice she gives (star charts?) then you SHOULD see your GP because there may be a problem, and the sooner it's identified and treated the happier everyone will be!
