in Cutting tax
Hello,
Apologies if I sound like an idiot!
My tax code is the usual 1100L, something like that.
My husband earns slightly less than me, his code is 1043L
He works for the NHS and he has taken part in the home computing scheme initiative, this takes £99 per month our of his wage.
We emailed HMRC querying his tax code, and today we've received a letter with exactly the same tax code and the same information on it.
It's the following we're confused about, and if anyone can help that would be great! He doesn't have a company car, we wash his uniform, he's just a basic worker. We receive no benefits apart from my DLA Lower rate.
Flat rate job expenses £125- what? What's this for.
Job expenses £18- what?
Earlier year adjustment £51- okay?
Less benefits in kind £661- what?
Less underpayment restriction £97 -again what?
Tax free income 10436 so that's his code too.
Overleaf then it says they told us we owed £19 from an earlier tax year, how? If it all automatically goes out of his pay?
Am I just being thick, and all this is correct?
I'm sorry for adding another question, that you probably receive loads of.
I just have no idea! My tax letters don't look like his. I have support from Access to work, and for some reason all my DLA letters and my tax letters are now going to my work address. Something strange the with HMRC.
Many thanks.

Your best option is to call (not email) HMRC so that you can ask them these questions and have a conversation with them if you don't agree with or understand their answers. Call first thing in the morning (around 7:45) for the best chance of getting through quickly. Your husband needs to call about his coding notice, and you need to call about your DLA letters.0

Flat rate job expenses £125- what? What's this for. NHS employees extra allowance
Job expenses £18- what? Extra allowance usually something he needs to do his job - membership / subscription / registration / union ?
Earlier year adjustment £51- okay? Has been added - maybe something not claimed in previous years - maybe 3 previous years job expenses ? (3 x 18 = 54)
Less benefits in kind £661- what?Does the computer scheme have some sort of value paid for by the employer maybe, they usually do.
Less underpayment restriction £97 -again what? To reclaim the tax on the underpayment from previous year (£97 x 20% is £19.40)
Tax free income 10436 so that's his code too. 11000 + 125 + 18 + 51 - 661 -97 = 10436
Overleaf then it says they told us we owed £19 from an earlier tax year, how? If it all automatically goes out of his pay? Always possible for a myriad of reasons

From one of the employee electronics schemesPlease note: The scheme will require a small monthly salary deduction payment to cover end of scheme liabilities and you will be liable to pay tax on any benefit in kind. All of these charges will be documented clearly when you are quoted and are explained fully in the brochure.0 -

True enough, although it's the OP that has ended the paragraph that mentions the letters with a reference to HMRC.0
