I was having problems with Google Chrome and Avast. See here:
https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5453706
I was getting the message from Google Chrome Your connection is not private. Attackers might be trying to steal your information
I have since installed Avira AV I haven't seen any message from anywhere.
Is it safe to continue? I have online banking I'd like to do. And I'm getting behind on other things that will start to get urgent soon.
Should I just be aware when (or if) that message ever appears again?

That issue was caused by Avast. You will be fine now as the problem has been removed.0

I'd be inclined to agree with wongataa. It sounds like the "dodgy" Avast web components weren't fully uninstalled until you got rid of Avast completely and switched to Avira.
There's an Avast Uninstall Utility, which you might want to run to make sure that all remnants of Avast are removed from your system:
https://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
Once you've done that, you should be able to reinstall Avast with the custom options mentioned on the other thread, and you shouldn't see those messages again. But obviously, if you're happy with Avira, stick with that.
As you seem to be concerned with security, you might want to have a look at SpywareBlaster. I've used it for years. It blocks malicious websites by automatically blacklisting them in web browsers (IE, Chrome, Firefox, etc.).
