I know this one, the same question has cropped up on various forums over the years, (Wow I sound old!)
Your friend MUST repay it. The law is quite clear. Your friend has been paid the money in error and has no right to keep it and must hand it back. If your friend spent it, or tried to conceal it he/she would be commiting a criminal offence. No ifs, no buts, (assuming friend is in England)
