I joined a gym about 6-7 months ago. When I joined they said I could get free passes for someone else to use every now and again. I therefore intended on going with my partner occasionally.
A month ago I went there and took my partner, using one of 4 passes we had accumulated.
When leaving I spoke to the receptions who said she couldn't go there for another month, as only one pass can be used per person per month. This annoyed me, as they didn't state this when I joined. I therefore said I wanted to cancel and filled out a form. The woman who came out didn't even try and talk me out of cancelling. I also cancelled the direct debit. I am now being bombarded with text messages stating I need to pay otherwise I will have to pay additional charges. I think this is because they want a months notice. Based on the fact I cannot use the passes they offered as they didn't tell me it was one pass person per month I don't think I should have to pay the month. I haven't used the gym since this day. Where do I stand?

If your contract states one month notice then you have to pay.
It is pretty standard in the industry. And no, the fact you didn't get all material facts about an add-on doesn't invalidate your contract.
So in short, pay the month.0 -
I don't think that there is a problem with the passes. She didn't say you could only use one per month, just one per person per month. You could easily take someone else.
Sounds like you didn't give the required notice to the gym to cancel as per your contract. Sounds to me like you will need to pay that notice period.“Time is intended to be spent, not saved” - Alfred Wainwright0
