Had to laugh to day!

My employer decided to give all an eye test today! We are all drivers and he asked us to stand approx 12 to 15 feet away from an A4 piece of paper he was holding up with a copied eye chart on it!

Does this mean he is now a qualified optician? There has to a law/rule on this!

It sounds like a pretty pathetic and useless test. Surely the obvious one to do would be number plate reading if you are all drivers.

The law is (assuming your not HGV/PSV drivers) that

    a. You must be able to read (with glasses or contact lenses, if necessary) a car number plate made after 1 September 2001 from 20 metres.

    b. You must also meet the minimum eyesight standard for driving by having a visual acuity of at least decimal 0.5 (6/12) measured on the Snellen scale (with glasses or contact lenses, if necessary) "
    c. You must also have an adequate field of vision - your optician can tell you about this and do a test.

Perhaps he has an ulterior motive. Are there some employees with dodgy vision who haven't declared it & this is a quick, easy & cheap way to flush them out

Give him the benefit of the doubt and assume there is a reason for why he is doing it.

The guy above me pretty much sums it up.

I suspect this is the case, someone complained so its a quick and easy way to see if there is an issue, rather than single one person out get everyone to do it to stop any claims of victimisation

What so specific about that date? Why not any numberplate?

It's clearly not a test you could rely on in court, but it might be a sensible way to see who needs to go and see an optician and get a proper test done!
The question is whether the eye chart he printed out was scaled properly for that distance.
Changing the world, one sarcastic comment at a time.
