Direct Debit double payment - 26 years!

My sister has discovered that she's been making a direct debit payment twice a month to the AA, instead of just the once a month, unbelievably for the past 26 years. The AA have responded saying they are "obliged to pay her £1000." which they have done. But she totals the amount of over payment over the 26 years amounts to over £6,000. What are her rights on this?
Please no smart remarks about her not checking her statements, I've already told her!
Thanks for any advice on this.

Is it an error on the AA's part?
Or has she bought two policies?0 -
It is likely down to proof of payment and the reason they are refunding anything.
Does she have all 26 years worth of statements to prove payment?
Why have they said they are limiting it to £1000?I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only.
