Spelling Mistake on Mortgage Offer

Hi everyone,

Being a stressed out FTB (and notorious worrier) I have just noticed that my middle name is spelled incorrectly on our mortgage offer. I have asked the broker to request it is amended but after having a search on the forums it looks like this leads to the application basically being assessed from scratch.

Just wondering if this is nothing to worry about or if anyone knows where this has happened before and then the mortgage hasn't been offered the second time?

Mortgage broker has said it should be reissued on Tuesday (thanks bank holiday!)

Things like this are lender dependent.

Not every lender does everything the same way, so if you tell us which lender you are talking about you might get a half decent response.

Sorry should have put that! It is with Halifax and went straight to valuation once the application was submitted with no request for additional information (so far!)

    Right.

Your broker goes back in the Halifax online system and amends the name. He re-quotes and resubmits and the case re-decisions.

The case should then automatically re-offer and a revised offer will be printed and sent to you and your solicitor in a couple of days.

If the result is a decline, the broker will then have to appeal the decision to credit decisioning/business assessor to try to get the online decision reversed.

This is VERY unlikely where a middle name has merely been mis-spelled.

FWIW if you do this on a Nationwide application, it has to be re-keyed from scratch as I once found out to my cost (my error!).

I managed to get a dip with nationwide with my fianc!es surname completely wrong (put in mine instead, maybe blame autofill) and still get accepted. Surely shouldn't have passed the credit check? had to start from scratch.

Oh dear! Mine just has one letter missing from my middle name that I pretty much never use, and I have a very unusual name so the credit check will have definitely still found me! (And it has shown up on my experian)

I think you have to notify them. If you don't, Sod's law is that one or both solicitors will notice at some critical point, such as the day before completion, and derail it at that point. Get it done now when it's just a minor glitch.

Thanks, yes I have asked for it to be amended, just stressing myself out that it might derail the whole thing, although it sounds like hopefully it should be ok, and my brokers said they should have an updated offer by the end of Tuesday.

The names on the offer have to match the names on the identification (passport) otherwise it causes a legal issue.

A 'changed' name can affect credit scoring, so it is important to get it right first time.

Thanks amnblog, what do you mean by affect credit scoring? They definitely checked me first time round so will they need to do it again?
