Waitrose have a special edition (costing £5.99) which also contains 3 pkts flower seeds and 3 pkts herb seeds plus a pair of "seed and weed" lightweight gloves.

Sainsbury's - Six Johnsons seeds incl: Sunflower Autumn Beauty, Poppy 'Ladybird', Basil 'Sweet', Parsley 'Plain Leaved 2', Lettuce 'Salad Bowl red and green' and Beetroot 'Perfect 3' - together norm £12.15.

Tesco - Six Mr Fothergill seeds incl: Courgette 'Black Beauty', Lettuce 'Salad Bowl red and green', Basil 'Sweet', Californian poppy 'Carmine King', Poppy 'Ladybird' and Cosmos 'Seashells mixed' - together norm £13.07.

Waitrose - Six Sarah Raven and Jekka McVicar seeds incl: Zinnia 'Early Wonder Mixed', Poppy 'Wild Poppy', Larkspur 'Giant Imperial', Basil 'Sweet', Parsley 'Plain Leaved 2' and Rocket 'Wild' - together norm £15.35.

If anyone has success growing basil from seed outdoors, please let me know where? In Lancashire, strapping 6" seedlings get devoured in hours, and whole plants overnight.

Thanks for the reminder! I buy the magazine and send the card to a friend who lives near lots of the gardens. She sends me postcards, so I know she gets good use out of it.

Dig for Victory, I'm trying basil outdoors in some hanging pots from Poundland. Slugs and snails will have to climb the trellis to get at it! http://www.poundland.co.uk/charlie-dimmock-tin-plant-pot-with-hanger The seedlings are up already.

Be careful if you are intending to buy from a particular store for specific seeds - my local Tesco had the Sainsbury's packs for some reason!
