Advice on cancellation

Hi MSE Forums,

I have booked my wedding venue and I have paid a deposit, but upon receiving the written contract to sign and send back I have read the terms and conditions and I am not happy with them. I am now worried that if I move go cancel the wedding they will say that I have made a verbal agreement and demand the cost of t he wedding from me.

The condition I am not happy with is the cancellation charge - "cancellation within 6 months of the wedding requires 50% of the total cost". I was not told about this charge when I placed the deposit, the first time I knew of it was when I read the contract.

I know I have lost my deposit but it's the cancellation charge I am worried about.

If I don't sign the written contract, would I be able to cancel without paying the cancellation charge. The wedding in Less than 6 months away but nothing signed.

Thanks for your help

To add, we have to pay 50% of the estimated cost for our venue 6 months before, I am guessing this is quite normal. Can I ask why you are changing venues?

    Next payment due 6months
prior to the Wedding date – estimated
    50% of total costs
    Final payment due – 2weeks
    prior to the Wedding date

Think of it the other way around... why should the venue lose out on money because you choose to cancel your wedding?

If you don't agree with the term, you don't have to continue with having your wedding there, but you will lose your deposit paid thus far.

In future, read the contract etc BEFORE paying a deposit!

(We also have to pay 50% of the venue cost 6 months before the wedding date).
