Recycling work uniform

Just wondered if anyone knew which (if any) charities accepted work uniform as part of their clothing recycling?

I have read there can be difficulties with de-branding the clothing, and I also wondered about potential security issues in the unlikely event of them falling in to the wrong hands.

Can anyone advise on any suitable charities?

I very much doubt anyone would want a work uniform from another individual and this is why employers would not take them back in most cases, A select few may do but that would be due to being tite.

Either bin it or post it off to a charity abroad.

Hi, have you spoken to your employer to find out if they offer a service, our employer offers this.

It is an ex-employer. It's stuff I've found while having a clearout, and thought it might be easier to do it this way rather than take it back to them.

I thought it might be possible to recycle the materials, rather than it being worn again.

The Oxfam clothes banks at supermarkets say they will recycle anything that they can't re-sell. That's unlike most of the others that only seem to want nice clothes.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
  • That sounds like a winner, will look out for one of those. Thanks

I think almost all charities have quite a developed system: first resell in shops, then send good quality but unsalable clothes abroad (I think India and Africa take a lot) and finally anything left is recycled and turned into other products such as felt paddings for upholstered furniture.

  • I always cut out the logo of ours (there's a potential for safety issues if the wrong person were to get hold of OH's old uniforms) and donate them for rags- they go straight into the rag bag as they have a large hole in the chest! The charity gets some money and we get some room in the wardrobe.
They call me Dr Worm... I'm interested in things; I'm not a real doctor but I am a real worm.
