Part time jobs for 13 / 14 year olds

Have tried to find a thread on this but couldn't see one.

My daughter is keen to earn her own money and I know by law is allowed to work 12 hours per week term time.
Do people have any ideas on what she could do?

There are no paper rounds available at present, she has mentioned online surveys but I'm not at all keen on this for many reasons, time-consuming, privacy, etc etc.

Anyone know of retail shops that take on under 16's for a Saturday job maybe or do most steer clear?

Any other ideas?

Very few will take on under 16s because of insurance - most policies will not cover under 16s.

She could do Swagbucks - they have mobile apps where you watch videos (so no surveys), and they take from aged 13.

You will struggle to find anyone who will take her at her age. Maybe have a look at the boost your income board for ways she could earn small amounts.

Gone are the days when teenagers are gainfully employed doing paper rounds, assisting with milk rounds going down the mones or up chimneys, etc. It ius a nightmare now to employ under 18's, let alone under 16's. There are Health and Safety Issues, insurance problems, safe guarding problems.

It's a great pity as so many teenagers want to work and it encourages them into a decent work ethos, but red tape and the moral minority have stuffed for everybody.

I had a Saturday job from the age of 15 (then the school leaving age) as did all my friends, but I don't think many people would think it a good idea for a 13 or 14 year old to work 12 hours a week. Given that the school week (teaching time) is less than 24 hours, 12 hours' work would be disproportionate.

Maybe in some places, I have no idea, but this is far from universal!

12 hours seems a ridiculously high number of hours to be allowed to work at this age though.

Are you saying it's less than that?

  • What about cleaning cars/mowing lawns/tidying people's front gardens? It wouldn't be regular but it could be a little bit of pocket money every now and then.

Do you live near a tourist beach? We live close to one and some of my daughters friends have seasonal jobs in the ice cream parlours along the beachfront.

Both my DD's 14/15 work 6 hours on a weekend at a local cafe, they earn £5.00 an hour and has been brilliant for them, both in terms of their own money but also confidence in dealing with the public and taking orders etc...

most their friends also work but we are in a touristy area so most in cafe's, hotels and attractions and earn from around £3.80 an hour
