Removing my name from a joint mortgage

Evening everyone,
looking for a bit of advice
When i was 18 a naive (now 26) my uncle got in a bit of trouble with his ex wife and wanted me to help him out so he could get her off the mortgage.
At the time i didn't think twice and we were very close and wanted to lend a hand, little did i know it would cause me this much agro 8 years later.

Im now 26, have £40k saved for a deposit for my own place and stuck on this mortgage with my uncle, we don't really speak and to be honest I'm running out of ideas on how i can tackle this.

The mortgage is with natwest and he had had a couple of late payments last year.
what is the process if possible of getting myself of. i did speak to natwest and was told he has to request to remove my name but he is sort of refusing to do this.

is there a way of forcefully removing my name by legal means i.e. Solicitor etc?

You'd need to force the sale of the property if your Uncle is unwilling to play ball. To remove your name requires your Uncle to remortgage the property in his name. If the mortgage isn't being paid on time, then it's not just his credit rating but yours that will be impacted. Sounds as if other issues are behind your Uncles reluctance to release you.
