Bailiff enter home for other persons debt

I live in a very quiet village and normally don't tend to lock my back door.

Today i got home from work to find a bailiffs letter on my sofa for an outstanding debt from an old tenant.

I was't best please that someone had been wandering about my house without my knowledge and recording videos. I understand they can gain entry by peaceful means but should they not have tried to speak to me first or give me notice? Also I spoke to their head office who said they wouldnt discuss any of it with me as my names not on the paperwork.

I told them the person had moved out a long time ago and that I wanted any videos taken to be destroyed immediatley but they just kept hanging up on me.

where do I stand? is this whats now happens in this country????

Send a letter stating that the tenant is no longer at the address and the date you moved in, and that you wish for the video records to be removed, and can they please confirm.

Oh, and lock your back door in future :)

Having seen a programme about high court enforcement, some can enter by way of unlocked doors and windows. I dont know if the people who left the letter have the same rights, but some can just turn up without notice

I think they will want more that just you telling them the person did not live there anymore. It may well be true in your case, but I imagine they get told that all day every day regardless of whether it is true or not.

I assume the videos are proof of the goods there and won't be destroyed until they are sure the person they want is not there.

A letter is official recorded evidence that you have notified them the debtor does not live at that address any more.

Rule number one is never phone a DCA or a Bailiffe, do everything in writing.

I would start locking the door.
Next time it might be someone with far worse intentions hiding in the house.
I do Contracts, all day every day.

You don't seem to have a clue how real life works, but at them same come across massively arrogant.

If anything was ever stolen from your house, your insurance wouldn't pay out because you keep your door unlocked because you seem to think you exist in the plot of an Enid Blyton story.

He's not arrogant he's frustrated. And understandably so.
Despite what others are saying I know there are still places in the UK you don't need to lock your door. Yes you always should and for now please please do. Bailiffs can only be stopped with proof. Do you have a tenancy agreement or mortgage paperwork to send a copy of? Obviously financial information blacked out. Send it in with the letter. Recorded delivery.
    Hope it's sorted quickly x

Whilst I agree that insurance wouldn't pay out, it's not unusual for us country dwellers not to lock doors

Mine is always unlocked as are most people's I know. Not only that, but those with Yale locks on the front doors often leave the key in the door for you to let yourself in ( I do market research so I see this a lot on my travels )

You might find that your nice rural area becomes more crime ridden now that you have advertised the fact that most people leave their doors open and keys are often in locks ;)
