Tesla Model 3

Had a look round the forum and can't find a thread. Wonder if any of the MSE community has put down a deposit for a reservation? We have test driven the Model S and its an awesome bit of kit, if the 3 lives up to its promise it really will be a game changer in the automotive industry.

With a 4KW PV system at home and only 200 miles driven a week in total it made perfect sense for us to put a deposit down on the Model 3 as we can charge at home at weekends and afternoons when I only work half days. Long wait starts now though, can't see the UK getting the car until 2018...

    Loads of info at https://speakev.com/forums/tesla-model-3/

Given the over 300k reservations it may be late 2019 before we see them in the UK - and quite possibly there will be a 60kwh ('300 mile' = realistic 180-240 mile) Nissan Leaf next spring. It is less clear whether the Chevvy Bolt is coming here at all.

The Tesla is probably aimed to be a BMW 3 series competitor so saloon not hatchback and 35k for the entry level 210 miles max model (more like 150 when driven at speed or in the winter).
    I think....

As a self confessed petrol-head I nearly bought a fully loaded RS3 at the start of the year (had the paperwork all printed off in front of me in the dealership) and something held me back. The price of that Vehicle was over £52k and just didn't feel like it was worth anything like that so we walked away.

The more I read about the 3 the more and more I am buying into the concept, it truly is a game changer for the industry - a car that can do 0-60 in sub 6 seconds (even quicker if you spec AWD and upgrade the battery) and the ability to charge it at home from sunlight for free (with a bit of planning I admit).

Musk has also open sourced all his patents as a challenge to other car manufacturers so it will be interesting to see if anyone takes him up on his challenge to build a better EV over the next 2-3 years...
