Working At CEX - What Are They Like To Work For?

I've got offered a job at the local CEX (secondhand DVD and music store) and just wondered what they are like to work for? the staff seem a nice friendly bunch who have a laugh together so I think I'd fit in as I love movies, music etc.

But as a company what are they like to work for? anyone worked for them before?

I'm slightly dyslexic so a bit anxious and wondered if that would be much of a handicap?

thanks !

I can't speak for CEX, but I have worked in that sector before & here's the honest truth. You'll deal with people on a daily basis from all walks of life, some will be alright with you, others will however make you question your faith in humanity! Prepare to be faced with people with an inflated expectation of the value of their goods on a regular basis, grow a thick skin to people who're going to play you. (i.e. they'll come in to get a quote then go to Game/Cash Gen/indies to get the best prices!) When it's all said and done there's a limit to what you can actually "get wrong", you have the item, you scan it, you're given a value - pretty simple.

As for dyslexia, well, I wish I could be more helpful, but a lot of the job will likely entail paperwork & "filing" which does require a level of accuracy. If your dyslexia is severe it may become an issue, if it's "minor" then it can be worked around - if you're willing to work at it you'll be fine.

Do you get discounts for the stock?

I hope you don't have a sense of smell OP, every branch of CEX I have been into has an overwhelming stench of BO.

Last time I went I had a bag of games to trade in, after lining up for two minutes I decided to donate them to the charity shop instead to give me poor nose a rest.

That is so weird, I was going to post the same thing as soon as I saw the title thread. It's like no matter what store you go into, even if it's in a different town, no one seems to bother bathe at that place.

With that said, congratulations Roxy and I hope you enjoy your time there! :T

In regards to your Dyslexia, how does in affect you?

For the places I worked we had various things for different transactions - so for example a simple trade in we'd take name & address along with a signature. For a cash trade in that'd then require I.D. the reference numbers being logged. (One particularly nippy local authority made us list everything that'd been traded in - that wasn't fun!) Similarly I'd expect to be able to check all the mobile phones & games consoles against CheckMend in order to make sure they're not "hot". Easy enough for me to say but it depends on how you handle your abilities.

Most I'd expect is to properly fill in stuff on their computer system I'd imagine, I've never traded in there or worked there so it's not familiar to me.

It takes me a bit longer to do things than most people. Like in school I could never write as fast as the other kids so use to get really anxious that I was getting mocked.. :(

I can also have really bad panic attacks.

But atleast I'm trying right? hopefully I have enough patience from the management to learn to become as good as the others are.

When your manager she has emo green hair and she has piercings/tattoos.. you hope she is cool ! :D

Someone's quite nervous about starting a position and wants to know experiences of people who have undertaken the role and 50% of the thread is people unable to resist the "CEX smells of BO" gag.

How I read the OP's posts, this is obviously a big step for them so why rain on the parade like that? I don't get people sometimes.

OP - I'm sure you'll do fine. Some of the most successful people in the world have dyslexia and as long as you're open about it and feel happy to get the support you need you'll absolutely ace it. Best of luck.

I'm sure it will be fine. And I will meet some new people so I'm trying to see the positives :T:beer::j

You'll be okay and I wish you the best. I'm not too sure if this is the same case as you but I know a couple people who were "Dyslexic" and it was a massive kick to their confidence. I remember telling one of them that they are no different from anybody else. Working in retail, you had smaller people who couldn't reach the top shelves. You will give them a stall, help them reach stuff or let them work in areas that don't require much height.

Sorry if I am not making sense but what I am trying to get at is, there is nothing stopping you from succeeding at and BEYOND this role.

I have worked with so many lazy people who are rude, have bad attitudes and I just wonder what possessed someone to hire them so it annoys me when someone feels they don't have a chance because of Dyslexia or they are not given it in the first place.
