any sewing experts here? making double duvet into single

I have a lovely double-duvet cover which I'd like to convert into a single-size one. (I was tempted to just look on EBay for a similar one in a single size)

Has anybody attempted this before? It sounds fairly straightforward, but I'm not too confident of my sewing skills!

I suppose the worst case scenario, I'll wreck the double duvet cover (which I rarely use anyway as it's too big) and have to buy a single one anyway :rotfl:

How simple it is will depend on whether the cover has an all over pattern and what sewing facilities/skills you have.

Put simply, for a plain cover, all you'd need to do is turn it inside out and sew a seam from top to bottom at the width of a single cover from one edge and then cut off the spare. If you had a sewing machine then the seam would take minutes and be stronger than hand sewing. I'd advise pinning it in place and even perhaps drawing a pencil line before you sew to keep it straight.

It gets more difficult with a symmetrical pattern with a big motif in the middle (imagine one with a football badge). Then you'd have to do two seams to keep the motif in the middle.

Thankyou! Good point about the pattern.

It's a floral pattern and I think it may look better with two seams to try and keep the symmetry. With luck I can just keep the press-studs which fasten it at the bottom and not have to alter them.

If there's enough, use the spare fabric for matching pillowcases or maybe a matching laundry bag with a drawstring. :)
