Sometimes my cats poop outside, sometimes they poop in the litter tray, there's no rhyme or reason to it!

With the litter tray in sight of the back door that is wide open, mine will quite happily squat in the tray facing the door. She will then get up and smell the flowers just outside the door (and nibble a bit of grass).

The thought of actually going outside to do her business never crosses her mind.
Her courage will change the world.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

My cat is the complete opposite - he will not suffer the indignity of pooping in the house regardless of the weather. We kept a litter tray out for him for a long time in case he ever needed it, but when I noticed the thick layer of dust that had settled over it decided to put it away.
Rain or hail, thunder and lightening - nothing will stop him using his rightful toilet patch underneath the overgrown shrub in our garden.

Cats always need access to a litter tray, otherwise during the night, poor weather, when fire works are being let off etc they are unable to safely toilet. Its also important to know your cats urination habits as they are a common sign of illness if they change.

How could you know when your cats have a pee unless your eyes are glued to the litter tray 24/7?

I don't think this is meant as when they go, more that in the case of my CKD cat, she does a huge amount of pee now and for me, it was a sign that something wasn't quite right. If she'd gone outside, i'd never have known. Also, years ago she got Cystitis and her using litter helped me to know

The digging is fairly audible and of course you can see the size of the wee, the type of poo etc. It was how I knew something was wrog with our last boy as he was squatting in his tray a lot, he had a blockage which would have been fatal if we hadn't noticed his change in litter habits.

Same with our cat. His poo had gone really runny, and had blood in it. Turned out he had a blockage and needed an operation.

Our cat always prefers to do his business inside, and won't do a pee and a poo in the same tray either.
  • Our cat has a tray but doesn't use it for months on end ... then suddenly he'll use it once or twice and that's all folks. His tray is in our bathroom and occasionally he'll do a pee whilst Mrs. Sleazy is doing hers .... funny creatures, but wouldn't do without him ....

My cat is a mostly indoor cat - i.e. she does go outside when I am at home but will only be out for 5 minutes then come back in again. She prefers to sit next to the open window and look out. If she goes out, its usually to eat grass!

She wouldn't dream about going for poop in the garden, so yes if she is outside and needs to go, she will come inside, use the facilities then go back out.

Well how strange - I was just about to start a thread asking this very question!

Both my older cats started going outside as soon as they were allowed out.

Moose will go outside if his tray is outside - and it's not raining! I may even be able to train him to use the garden (I put litter on the garden which he happily used) but if it's raining, he just won't go out at all!
