Does this situation justify a grievance?

Remuneration isn't meant to be equitable. I have no doubt I have worked for companies where people doing the same job as me but worse get paid more, and also where people doing the same job as me but better are paid less.
It is all in the negotiation. It's a matter of how desperate you are, and how desperate the company is at the time. You are selling your efforts, they are buying. If someone else values his efforts more highly than you do, then that's his business.
In this case the other manager probably simply said he wouldn't do it unless they paid him, whereas you were prepared to do it regardless. He might well not have cared about the "valuable experience", whereas you did. You put a value on that (you must have; otherwise why work for nothing) and the company saw that because of this they didn't have to pay you more.0 -
Do you see any incongruity with your post? Shall I point it out?
IT IS about the money and benefits! You have been nagging them (well not nagging, but bringing it up a lot) a few times over 6+ months about the step-up rate.
To then go on and say that you are in it for the principle and respect, not the money, is just absolutely wide of the mark.
Let me shine some light on the "principle" and "respect";
Principle - You run the risk of biting the hand that feeds you. By all means push, but push too much and they will bite back. They can bite much harder than you.
Respect - They don't have to respect you! They can ship you out tomorrow (depending on the length you have served) and replace you with someone else. Easy as that.
The only principle and respect here is to yourself in keeping the crust on your table and seeking opportunities in the future.
Thanks for the replies everyone! I shan't be putting a grievance in. I'll approach the situation differently next time.
@dayton
I wouldn't be challenging respect and principle if the benefits/pay were exactly the same. The fact that the pay and benefits differ to that I'm on at the moment is the sole reason I find this to be ethically wrong...0 -
It just occurs to me that you are at the ideal time to go for a new job.
Approach another employer, and you have a great story 'I acted up for x months, and really thrived on the added responsibility. Sick leave person is now back, and I would like to continue with more responsibility. I have a lot to offer your company.' Time to go to some interviews, if your current employer isn't prepared to show that they value you!Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0
