    Thanks everybody some great suggestions, which I'll look at. Pastures new I will try that for when I have made stews and things like that to keep the amounts at a sensible level!

    I'd add that what you eat can be as important to your health, pocket and waistline as the portion size.


    If you take a traditional meal as being meat, carb and veg then if you have a large portion of veg (third to a half a plate) that's much better for you than filling up on either of the others. You can get your protein more cheaply from eggs or pulses than most meats.
