It depends on what you want. If you are planning on lifting regularly, then you might be better to get a set of Olympic weights (bumper plates are worth the extra if you are going to be dropping them regularly). Strength Shop do some good beginner packages, (£269.99 for a 7ft Olympic bar and 100kg of weights). I wouldn't bother with the 50kg sets you can get in places like Argos, chances are you'll progress out of that weight fairly quickly. Argos do a cheaper 100kg set for £149.99.

Thanks for your help and advice,I shall have a look
  • All depeneds what you're doing and what your current strength/goals are.

Smaller sets from Argos etc will have lots of 1.25/2.5Kg weights in their 20Kg starter packs. That's a lot of little weights on a bar. You'll probably run out of room!

Have a hunt on gumtree and eBay. Might get something a bit meatier for a few quid less than new. Doesn't need to look pretty, just be functional.

If lifting heavy, be careful if you don't have a spotter! :)

Or buy yourself a Power Cage (if you have space).

Also be aware there are 2 different bar widths, so weights that fit one bar size won't fit the other. Olympic barbells have a 2" diameter where the weights slide on and Standard barbells have a 1.1" diameter.

Ebay can be a good place to pick up secondhand stuff - look for local things you can collect.
  • Ebay

No point buying something new, when a cheaper second hand product will be no different in quality.
  • First place to check for me would be eBay and gumtree.

My brother sold a full set including a bench for like £40.

The prices you quote seem reasonable. I recently picked up 4x5kg plates from tescos for £30. Can make 2x30Kg dbells total now.

I'd advise you get the metal screw on ends. The red plastic ones just shred their thread after a few weeks use.
