Ok time to stop messing around at money saving and get the job done properly

Ok moment of truth

We started dealing with our debts in 2004 with a staggering 20k owed to various companies including several catalogoes and 1 credit card we joined cccs and the debt is now £11,213. however, recently I have made a few silly mistakes and need to get back on track. I have posted an soa but the mistakes I have made are I joined napster for some music for a party and my daughter thinking I would save about £20 by not buying several cds but I unwisely and unknowningly sighned up to a 6 month contract some i now have to pay for another 6 months and nothing can be placed on disc.
I then missed a payment on my car resulting in payments of £309 now instead of £224 and at some point I missed a months council tax so I have to pay £175 instead of £116 and I have recently given up my part time job which was earning £550 a month as little boy is getting worse as he gets older instead of better.

so here goes
Monthly Incomings:

My salary - £400.00
Partners salary - £1000.00
Benefits - £320
DLA for little boy £241

Total - £1,9661

Monthly Outgoings:

Mortgage/Rent - £350
Council Tax - £175 nomally £116
Gas - £31
Electric - £39
TV License - £12
Sky £19.00
Phone - £64.00 including broadband
Food - £300 including cleaning and dog food
Car Insurance - £41.00
Petrol - £60
House Insurance £8
RAC £9
CCCS £295
UNI costs £30
Children £60
Car £309 normally £225
Water £40
Total: £1,842.00

Please help me cut back somewhere and stop making stupid mistakes

Thanks:o

    Hiya,
Most things seem reasonable to me. Perhaps you need to cut down on some of your food/cleaning bill by looking at the old style board - keep a spending diary and have a look at what you really need.
What is the £60 for the children, savings or spending or something else, could that be cut down for a while until you get back on track.
The telephone/broadband does seem a bit high, are you tied into a contract for it?
The sky is low, but could you do without? Wish my house insurance was that low!
You could also look into signing up to some of the survey sites to get a bit extra spending money.
  • The childrens money is pocket money, drama lessons and bus fares to school I wish I could drop them but you know stroppy teenagers and they are pretty understanding

    thankyou for your reply:A

    Sky £19.00
Phone - £64.00 including broadband - need to shop around, check Martin's articles for the cheap phone/tv/internet deals
Food - £300 including cleaning and dog food - take a look at the Old Style board
Car Insurance - £41.00 - is that the cheapest? try confused.com to find cheapest, then quidco for cashback
Petrol - £60 - for one car? can this be reduced any?
    House Insurance £8
    RAC £9
    CCCS £295
    UNI costs £30 - ? what's this for?
    Children £60
Car £309 normally £225 - will this go down when the missed payment is covered?
Water £40 - is this on a meter?

  • I get my phone and braodband with TalkTalk for £22 per month and there are other providors doing similar deals so I do think that £64 per month is very very high.

Can you sell the car, hand it back - do something with it. With all due respect the car is costing you almost as much as your home, which should not be the case. Can you post more info about it. How long you have had it , how much still to pay etc. Our household runs two very decent cars and we don't pay anywhere near that much money - including insurances...

The shopping can be reduced significantly - plan ahead better and look at some of the old style boards for advice.

I do think there is quite a bit of saving in your SOA to be honest

You have Sky so definitely look into getting their Sky Talk and Broadband. Should dramatically drop those phone costs

I know that Sky do free broadband, I'm not sure on the speed or anything, but it is free.
    Current debt - £16,300 :(
    Debt at worst 17/03/2011 - £18,067.62:eek::eek:
:ANot going anywhere else, ever again :A
  • i'd cancel sky and reduce your food bill in half easily!! Check the old style board. Meal plan, only buy what you need not want.
    Make £10 a day challenge March 2013 £101.24 / £240 :j
    WSC 10 March - £0 / £5
    Debt £17,294 - 7th March
  • Thankyou

The car unfortuntately cannot be sold as I work for the local college out in the community and some days I have 20 minutes to cross the city between jobs however good news is onily 10 payments left 2 more payments left at the higher rate and then it drops to £225 a month. I curse the day my dad persuaded me to buy a car from yes car credit. I am sure he was on commission!!

Has for insurance I had to have business insurance for my part time jobs s oas soon as it is up for renewal I will be getting so new quotes.

And I will start trying to cut back on the phone bill :A
  • I definitely think you could cut back on the food bill if you only have 1 child. Also I would drop Sky, or get the free Sky broadband and drop the other broadband.

I have a 14 year old, a 12 year old and a 9 year old and they seem happy with freeview!
