Keeping pillows clean/getting a good nights sleep.

Outside of regular suggestions like go to bed early and reading is there anything that can help a good nights sleep.
I generally have no problems falling asleep but I wake so often during the night for first 4 hours then after 4 hours I struggle to wake and it means when its time to wake up I feel so tired or I end up sleeping 10-12 hours which screws with my body clock more.
I also struggle to sleep on a single bed unless I over tired as I like to toss and turn and if I do that on a single bed unless its against a wall I fall off, and even against a wall I have limited space.
On the pillows side I didnt wash them for well over a year, I was shocked when they turned out white (I use industrial style powder I get from Ebay) as I was hoping them fresh will help.
Is there any scents that will help or something similar?

Are you going to bed too early maybe?
Magnesium supplement from Holland and B is great if taken with a milky drink.
The bed might be a problem. How can you solve that for yourself?
Pillows will not cause insomnia unless they are hard as brick and you do not like that. Scents do nothing except make you sneeze IMO. But others might find that ridiculous and say otherwise.
If all else fails, take an anthistamine pill that causes drowsiness. Available ad infitinum over the counter in Spain. Ingredient to look for is diphenhydramine. It is not addictive, but very effective. I know. LOL0 -
I have a awful sleep pattern mostly due to part depression but the main thing being at uni had a flatmate who had 24/7 parties so never knew when I would get sleep (and the reason I dropped out as was too tired to go to lectures and write essays)
For pillows I shove 2 or 3 normal ones into a pillowcase as if they are too small I sink into them and they are useless so they end up thick
Did try some sleeping tablets and whilst they did help a little they made me feel hungover at same time for the whole day.
A little also training myself to sleep easy, before that once I was asleep I slept heavy but lets say I needed toilet in middle of night I was unable to get back to sleep, it ended up that I made myself sleep through anything which backfired to mean I slept heavy.0 -
I recently realised I am more sensitive to sleep temperature than I thought, and a cool room, not too thick covers but a hot waterbottle to help me drop off gives me a better night's sleep than being overall warmer. This combination may not suit you, but you might have a play with temperature. But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.

Thanks for mentioning, I have to sleep in just underwear as I feel hot normally, I do sleep a little better with window open but then its too cold.
I get nightmares in a hot room.0 -
I have this problem too. There are many posts scattered about the threads on this forum written by me at 2 or 3 am.
I would definitely make sure that your room is not too hot. You want to be cosy in bed but able to breathe cool air. Lavender is supposed to be good to send you off to sleep but funnily enough I get better results with Olbas oil. I know! Weird.
I used to really stress about not sleepingvbut now I just look on it as a half-time break in the middle of the night. I find that doing Sudoku puzzles makes me sleepy. In fact I have to be careful now because I am apt to nod off if I do them while travelling...
I suppose you have done all the usual things like putting up black out curtains, making sure there are no stand-by lights on appliances and not watching TV or using a computer before you go to sleep.
The other thing I try to do is not drink coffee after lunchtime. Really hard that is. I love the stuff.
Try not to fret about it, getting all tense because you are not asleep is the best way to keep yourself awake.
Good luck zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Coffee/energy drink just end up making me not sleep at all so I almost never drink them unless its lunchtime at latest so thats like you.
I don't have blackout curtains I just pin up old sheets to the window but that means I can't get natural light in there and blackout curtains are too expensive, was thinking of those things I think velcro on back of normal curtains.
With the sheets up I get a better night sleep but still not perfect as I have no natural light in morning, so I took the sheets down.
I tend to sleep better in pitch blackness.
A contradiction I have is I like halogen bulbs as energy saving bulbs are too dim for me but they may keep me awake, I guess I can add a dimmer switch or something.
A bad nights sleep leaves me drained in day so not able to relax so then not being able to get a good nights sleep that night (or at most I am so tired I fall asleep instantly but its more I am so tired and not actual nice sleep)
Or to say that bigger when I get a good nights sleep I am more active be that go to shops or as simple as play a video game which then chills me out so by bedtime I get a nice nights sleep, bad night sleep means I have no energy to play a video game so by bed time I am tense so get a bad nights sleep.0 -
I don't sleep very well and wake up several times during the night.I have osteoarthritis and I find that when I wake during the night its because my joints are aching I get up ,nip to the room next door and log on and browse for half an hour on the net then go back to bed Often its just moving around a bit eases the joints a bit as I do tend to stiffen up.
Oh the joys of growing old ehbut it sure beats the alternative
:):). I read quite a bit as well. But with the lighter morning once I'm awake and its growing light then I am up and the kettles on I rarely am in bed after 6.00.a.m. no matter what time I go in the evening (usually around 11.30ish) I just have found that as I have got older I didn't seem to need as much sleep as before

See? I told you.
Re: blackout curtains. You can get some that are just liners that you attach to the existing curtains. D*nh*lm do them but you may be able to get some cheaper on line.
What do you mean about halogen bulbs? Surely you don't leave them on when you are sleeping? Otherwise I don't think that they will make any difference.
I have read somewhere that using things like video games before you go to sleep is not a great idea. Is there something else you could do? Perhaps listen to some music. I was thinking of something calming rather than heavy metal!!
It seems that you may have to re-think your going to bed routine.
I think that your body gets used to waking up at a certain time and will do it at approximately the same time each night so you need to break that habit. I am searching my mind to remember anything I have read about getting a good nights sleep.
I'm pretty sure that one of the good things to do is to go to bed at the same time each night no matter how sleepy or tired you are and to get up at the same time each morning, again no matter how sleepy you feel. Your body somehow gets used to that routine. Then if you are fairly physically active during the day, but not just before you go to bed, you should sleep better. I don't know how possible this is for you but anything is worth a try.
Must go. My sudoku is calling.

When the kids were little there were times that I was so tired I would have given anything to have the time to sleep another hour! Now that I have the luxury to do so, I don't have the ability. I just don't need as much sleep.0
