RTE Player In Northern Ireland

I live in the North and can receive all the Republics TV stations via my aerial I would like, however to receive the RTE Player so I might watch catch up TV. Unfortunately, due to geo blocking I'm only able to receive some programs and not others. As a case in point I can't watch catchup for the program 'What Are You Eating,' but I have no difficulty viewing 'The Late Late Show'

I do appreciate that ISP's use Dynamic IP addresses as opposed to static addresses and that this is part of the problem, but it does look like the ISP's and RTE are blaming each other!! I have a subscription to Getflix but unfortunately they don't unblock Republic's TV's stations.

This is what RTE SAY
We endeavour to make as many programmes as possible available on the RTÉ Player to users within the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. In some cases, rights restrictions require that only users within the Republic of Ireland can view certain programmes. Access is therefore restricted using a technology called geo-blocking.
Sluger O'Tool has quite an interesting POST on the topic

But the bottom line is: is there a way around this? I've registered with a Southern address but it made no difference.

Kevin

    Vpn?
Find a proxy in the south that you can route through, so it looks like you're in Eire... The same kind of thing that people use to watch iplayer outside the UK.

Note: I've never done it myself, so I can't supply step-by-step instructions, but there should be plenty out there on Google.

He is in Éire. Éire is just the Irish for Ireland and not for either of the statelets within it to the exclusion of the other.

Not exactly correct. Eire can have two meanings, it is the Irish language name for the geographical island of Ireland. It is also the official first name of the Irish Republic (26 counties) the other six are called Northern Ireland and are part of the United Kingdom.

Therein lies the problem. I live in NI while the RTE Player is part of the Irish Republics state broadcasting system and I was wondering if there was a way to download the IR version and use it as my RTE player? However, having read Slugger O'Tools article it appears not unless you guys know a work around?

Just been looking into this and RTE are very good at detecting if you are using a VPN or Proxy to try and appear as if you are online in ROI (please don't turn this into a border argument). Basically RTE will let you watch RTE Player in NI if you have an IP address that it knows is from NI. UTV Internet and Virgin media provide this but many other broadband providers don't. It's called geo-blocking and it's something that's in use more and more often.

I tried all sorts of free systems to access it from home but failed. I ended up calling with a friend who is on Virgin Media and watching it on his PC there.

Looks like it's not possible. Ah well hopefully I'll get most of what's wanted on the international player

And thanks to everyone who replied

  • If you've got an android device, try downloading the RTE Player on it. Worked for us when the apple store would only let us download the international version.
