Hi all,
Since 2008, I have battled both anxiety and depression. I have recently come through a stage where my thoughts have led to a poor mental state and not seeing all the good in my life.
I just wondered if people took vitamins or had any other solutions to taking anti depressants as I have taken them before and I didn't feel hugely different and I don't want to be relying on meds long term.
I know exercise will help. I have just started feeling mentally better but wanted to see if any vitamins and keep my mind positive and help my general well being!
Thanks all

Hi
Yes exercise will definitely help especially if you can get out in the fresh air.
If you search on Pinterest or Google for foods and vitamins for depression /mental health it will tell you the best things to eat, along with a balanced diet. Also drink plenty of water to always make sure you are well hydrated.
Good luck.0 -
Vit D and Vit B deficiency have been linked to depression.
Also Homocysteine to general menta capacity0 -
Two things spring to mind: omega capsules, expecially if like me you don't eat fish, which is a good source of omega 3 6 and 9.
Then there is 5-HTP which is a natural antidepressant. I recommend reading up about it if you are interested.0 -
Why not just get some CBT?
There's a free online CBT - Moodgym. Can do it at your own pace in your own time and wherever you want.
Vitamins won't make you feel better. Take it from someone with 23 years of A&D.0 -

5-HTP is clinically proven to be beneficial in depression, but must not be taken alongside SSRI's.
OP if you are taking any prescription medication please consult with a pharmacist before adding supplements to your diet.0 -
Vit D has helped my depression more in the 12 months I have been taking it than the antidepressants I have had in 10 years!Second purse £34.75/£50.00
Third purse £0.00
Paying £5.00 a week in second purse
Total stockpile value0 -
That Vit D info is very interesting. The amount of anti-depressants being taken in this country is worrying so any more-natural fix has to be a good thing. Exercise (especially in the sunshine) has amazing healing properties.-X-Missima-X-0

The hottest topic in natural health and depression is that your gut microbes can dictate your mood.
By altering your gut bacteria, you can alter your tendency to depression and other mood issues.
Dr David Perlmutter (author of Brain Maker) and Dr Kelly Brogan are great advocates for this.
Simple measures to change your gut microbes (micro-organisms including bacteria, yeast, viruses etc) include taking anti-inflammatory supplements (such as vitamin D3, anti-oxidants and quality fish oils) eating an anti-inflammatory diet, reducing stress, eating unpasteurised fermented food such as raw sauerkraut, eating prebiotic food (eg leeks, onions, garlic) and perhaps most of all using quality, tested, probiotic supplements.
There are many quality probiotics available with discount via [Text removed by MSE Forum Team]
It is good practice to rotate the probiotc supplements you use, so to promote as diverse a microbiota as possible.0
