First pay slip emergency tax

I'm paying emergency tax:mad:

What do I have to do please, I'm a non tax payer and also want a low earnings exemption from NI contributions

Is it the same people I contact?

Is it best to write to inland Rev, or ring them?

Try calling HMRC in the first instance. Be aware they are notorious for either not answering at all, or putting you in a queue and then cutting you off.

Tax and NI are calculated differently in that tax is worked out over a year but NI is due in respect of each payment, whether that be weekly or monthly. If your earnings are too low to pay NI on any particular pay day then no NI should be deducted by your employer.

To understand what is happening here I think you need to give exact figures. The emergency tax code is 1100L at the moment (was 1060L if the payment you are talking about occurred last tax year) If however you are talking about tax codes of either BR or 0T then you are not on emergency tax code and what you need to do depends on whether you have a P45 and if not then what new starter declaration you made to your new employer. The starter declaration choices are
A - This is my first job since last 6 April and I have
not been receiving taxable Jobseeker's Allowance,
    Employment and Support Allowance, taxable
Incapacity Benefit, State or Occupational Pension.
B - This is now my only job but since last 6 April I
have had another job, or received taxable
    Jobseeker's Allowance, Employment and Support
Allowance or taxable Incapacity Benefit. I do not
receive a State or Occupational Pension.
C - As well as my new job, I have another job or
receive a State or Occupational Pension.

No, you need to call the tax office and check you have the right code. If they confirm you need a new code or amendment, then they will send a letter about it and the new code will enable you to get the tax you have paid returned, if you should not be paying it.

NI is payable if you earn over £155 per week. You have it deducted if you earn more than that and the only exemption is if you don't.

Good luck, take a good book to read while you are on hold to HMRC.
