bankruptcy and gambling

Hi, I recently posted on being made bankrupt by HMRC, which sadly is inevitable

Much of my current predicament was caused by an addiction to gambling, for which I sought treatment 2 years ago-most of my debt is to HMRC, unpaid income tax and CGT, there are a couple of outstanding spread-betting debts which prob account for about 10% of the total. I'm not entirely sure how much of this I should be telling the OR, or how much they will want to know, obviously I am prepared to disclose everything but this might impact further down the line?

Further I have actively continued my treatment for the past 2 years, including completing various programmes, which I can substantiate through letters from therapists and other professionals-I have been completely 'clean' for the period-would these help with the OR?

Thanks in advance for any help and guidance

    Hi london1973

I can only really speak in general terms, as much will hinge on the discretion of the OR.

Gambling is an issue which could lead to the OR seeking a Bankruptcy Restrictions Order, which could result in you being subject to the conditions of bankruptcy for longer than the standard 12 months. The recentness (if that is a word!) of any gambling will be a factor in the OR's thinking, as will any steps you can show you have taken to address it. The treatment you have sought will help mitigate things, I'm sure, but you won't necessarily be asked to forward letters from therapists etc.

Just be ready to give a very comprehensive account of your situation to the OR when asked.

    Good luck
