i have defaulted on a card from this provider. However, despite the default they are stiill charging me late default fees!

Have you wrote to them and arranged any sort of payment plan? A default doesn't mean they automatically stop adding charges0

You should check the terms and conditions of what you signed or the account you had (if this relates to a debit card/ current account). Glentoran99 is correct that the creditor can continue to add interest and fees even after the default. To try and stop this you should write to the creditor to negotiate a repayment plan based on what you can afford and ask them to freeze the interest and charges. Good luck,
