Barclays: Basic account to Regular account.

Hi all.

I/We have been discharged from our BR for 2 year now (no payment order), and have had a Barclays basic account since. I was wondering if there's a period of waiting before becoming eligible for a Barclays regular account?

No big deal if I have to wait the 6 years. This all come about when trying to set-up Apple pay. Basically it wouldn't accept my current basic account card. I popped into my local branch today to see if there was some sort of technical issues, and was told Apple pay will not support a basic Barclay account!! I can't verify one way or the other if this is BS or not.

So, the question I suppose I should ask is this: has anyone on here successfully set-up Apple pay on their iPhone with the same basic current account as I have?

Many thanks.

  • Hi, it's true that the Barclays basic account is not supported by Apple Pay 😕

I applied for a normal current account with Barclays a few months ago, it wasn't an instant decline, they asked me to go into branch with my debit card so they could confirm my ID and set the account up. I was very reluctant but in the end I went in, omg it was so humiliating 😓. She looked at my account and said it was flagged as being eligible to be upgraded but when she pressed the button it flashed up in big red letters I had been bankrupt, I couldn't get out of there quick enough 😳.

Have you thought about the flex basic from nationwide? I switched in December and have not regretted it at all, it's a brilliant account considering its basic! I've set mine up with Apple Pay and it's brilliant! Apparently after 6 months nationwide will consider upgrading to the full account though the basic account is more than enough for my needs.

    Hi there,

Many thanks for the reply - very informative. I'm in no immediate hurry to have Apple pay. I certainly wouldn't consider changing banks 'just' to have Apple pay. It's not that important. Since our discharge from BR, I/we have managed admirably so-far without it. Again, many thanks for the reply - some food for thought at the least.

As an aside, how long were you discharged before thinking of applying for a regular current account?

My bankruptcy came of my credit file last December but I have a BRU on my file til this October. I've got the CO OP cashminder account I tried to upgrade it a few years back but had a polite letter saying no until I had a clear credit file.

I tried for a flex direct last month with nationwide they said no and offered flex basic. I declined as I can wait another 6m for a normal account. I did select no for overdraft but yes to cheque book so that could have been the issue.
  • Currently no Barclays accounts work with Apple Pay.

They do. It should of gone live on the 27th but was delayed for another week or so. It has gone live as of 5th of this month.

I was AD in 2014 and had no problem opening a Nationwide flexdirect but have been shown the door by other high street banks. Have you done the whole 'clean up' thing and made sure you are on the electoral role?
Who needs Applepay anyway - I'm such a dinosaur that even the wireless thing on my debit card is likely to remain unused for a good while yet. :D

    Hi there,

Yes, I have cleaned up all of my credit files and I am on the electoral role.

I don't 'need'' Apple pay. I just thought since I treated myself to a new shiny iPhone, I would give it a go.

It amuses me that the major high-street banks won't give you a current regular account - but after 6 years they probbly will after your BR has dropped off the system. 2 years, 4 years, 6 years? What's the difference. I'm AD, done my time, so-to-speak!!

In 3 years time when my BR drops off the radar, I will be in exactly the same position as I am now, ie, full-time employed, clean credit files, bla bla bla. I can't see why I can't have a regular current account with Barclays. Maybe I'll enquire the next time I go into Plymouth. They can only say no!! :)

  • Barclays now do apple pay - just not the basic account.

Nationwide basic account looks about best, does mobile app, online, telephone, contactless and apple pay and they review account automatically every 6 months to see if you can have a standard account

I agree my finances are in the best shape ever! No debt, regular income, good savings. Today would be no to a standard account in October it will be a yes and my circumstances will be exactly the same! :rotfl::rotfl:

I have got Apple Pay on my Barclaycard initial tho :-)

I'm intrigued as to why it would be a yes in October! Is your 6 years up?
