That's housing associations, not the private sector. HA, in case you haven't noticed, offer the security of tenure that the private sector doesn't.0 -

The only thing stopping many youngsters from buying these days is a £40k plus deposit. It is the money supply that is to blame not those that do not depend upon the money supply.
Why would you need a 40k deposit on a two bed terraced house costing 80k? Or are you thinking that the SE and London are the same as the rest of the country?0 -

Yes I did notice but not everyone wants to live in a housing association property. But you asked about elderly people not wanting to do maintenance and this housing association as well as others and private retirement villages offering rented housing make a big thing about the lack of maintenance if you rent a property from them.0 -

I live in Hertfordshire and I know of very many couples in their 20s and 30s that cannot afford to buy a place of their own. Forget a house - they cannot buy a one bed flat.
The only reason my own children were able to buy is because I always used the Family Allowance/Child Benefit or whatever it was called when I was getting it to pay an endowment for them. It adds up to a tidy sum over the years.0 -

That is because you live in Hertfordshire it doesn't apply to most of the rest of the country. There are nice areas in the north of the UK where you can buy a house for less than 100k The north of the country doesn't have a housing shortage.0 -

Not everyone can work in the north of the country.
One reason that London and the south east have such high house prices is that the demand is there because of the work situation.
I'm also in Hertfordshire and you would struggle to find a 2 bed flat for less than 300k in my area.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages, student & coronavirus Boards, money saving boards. No part of the country has a housing shortage. The number of houses there are and the number of people there are is not so different from 30 years ago.
Some parts of the country have a shortage of property for sale, but that is because in eg London there are punitive transaction taxes on selling and then buying property. These are successful at stamping this behaviour out (did you see what I did there?) and as a result there are few sellers and few buyers.
You don't put a 500% transaction tax on behaviour you approve of.0
