Notice to give when no contract given

Options
Morning all. I have been in my job for nearly 8 months now. I've never been given a contract to sign as the head chef always said that until I'd been there 2 years I had no rights. I get that but what happens if I want to leave. Do I have to give any formal notice and if so how much (by law I mean, I asked my new boss yesterday and he wasn't sure).

Basically I have a trial for a new job on Sunday and the job is mine on the basis I can show competence in the trial, which I know I will but also they are looking for people to start ASAP, hence my question.
