Getting a new senior level part time jobs? Do they exist

I would like to start a family, but would still like to work part time. However I know my current employer doesn't believe in part time or reduced hours. Think Scrooge.

We work a very long office day which is very draining. I do think it's too much already for all the staff, but it would be impossible to do it and commute with child care. I would need to loose 3 hours a day to fit around a day nursery.

So if I won't be able to go part time with my current employer then how realistic is it to get a new senior level role part time? Has anyone managed this or mainly through returning to a previous job after mat leave?

Jobshares might work, but it's unlikely to be senior, more midlevel - a good way to keep skillset going for a few years

What level do you mean by senior?

In general, I'd think you'd be better going for a full time job at this level and proving your worth to the company before going on maternity leave and asking to go part time rather than trying to do it the other way round.

I'm sure there are managers at a very high level who work part time, but I would expect that most of those would already have a full time track record at the company they work for and have been in a position to reduce their hours, I don't think many would start a new job and immediately be part time.

Well every company has it's own structure for titles, so I guess I mean very well paid. I work in London - marketing job.

    Job share might be possible?

I have worked a number of places where on return to work others have asked to go part time or work flexi and it's been denied due to needs of the business.

I think modern working should be more flexible, or allow working from home, but a lot of companies still don't. :(

Then start your own business and allow it?

You do have right to officially request flexible working but the employer also has the right to say no due to some reasons which on the whole probably wouldn't be to difficult to prove.

  • Could you see if they would do compressed hours? So you do monday - thursday, still the same number of hours but you get fridays off. In reality though you still might end up working on friday depending what your role is, and if people need your sign off a lot. Or could you work from home sometimes? Although the people who normally like being in the office all week where I work at least, are the ones with kids as they are too distracting to let them work from home.
