Annual bonus owed

18 months ago my then boss gave me a promotion and along with a pay rise, I was told that I would get an annual bonus - paid in two halves July and January. I have emails from him and my HR manager at the time. My boss was supposed to create some KPI's linked to the bonus, but this never happened.

My boss has since left and the HR manager has also left.

So last July I had to speak to the CEO as my first bonus was not paid. He dealt with it and I was paid the bonus. Come January, no bonus again. I spoke to my boss, he sent the query to the new HR director and since then the only feedback I have received is that my CEO doesn't believe that my original boss had the right to offer me a bonus. The fact that I have emails that include my boss, the HR manager and the managing director doesn't seem to account for anything.

Every time I approach the subject with my HR director, I am told that they need to catch the CEO in the right mood. This has now gone on for three months and no sign of said bonus.

So what should I do next?
Fed up of keep chasing HR and my immediate boss doesn't seem interested in chasing this.
Go over my boss and HR directors heads and go straight to the CEO?

Are you willing to lose your job over it?

No and I don't understand why it should come to that?
If I have everything in writing (admittedly it's only email), can they really go back on their word?

Because when push comes to shove, the company will pay you the money, and then will sack you, legitimately. Following all necessary procedures.

Why sack me for asking for what I believe I am owed?
  • So ask HR to get you a new job contract, signed, with details of a contractual bonus in it. An email isn't going to cut the mustard.

They might sack you for being a pain in the !!!! though

I've not been paid my bonus either for a year; as it is non-contractual and linked to company performance. Maybe it is time for your bonus to be clarified?

Because they clearly don't want to pay you.

The real question is: Why would you want to work for somewhere that treat you like this?

Because that's just the way people are.

You either have to let it go, or pursue it and risk the consequences of upsetting your boss(es).

If you're lucky, they'll have a change of heart and pay you what you're owed without issue, but from what you've said that doesn't sound likely.

Good news at last - I was paid my outstanding bonus yesterday, plus a little extra as an apology. Manager was very sorry for all the hassle and has told me that it has all be straightened out now.
