Where are my Deeds?
_SJP_
So after 12 years of overpaying my 25 year mortgage I am free of that shackle...
Now then, where are my deeds? The mortgage provider says that they don't have them and that if I want a copy of them I have to contact the Land Registry. But where are the originals?
I have been with the same provider since I took out the mortgage (re-mortgaging along the way of course), originally Stroud and Swindon who were then taken over by/merged with The Coventry.
The only other party were the solicitors who arranged the mortgage in the first place.
I am not paying another penny to anybody other than some postage.
The house belongs to me now and I will be ******** if they will get any more out of me.
Are the deeds still required these days? I'd say yes, some say no.
Thanks in advance to any advice...

Check if your property is on the land register. Odds are high it is, If it is, the answer is "no".0

Our blog article explains some of the basics re the deeds.
In many cases where you have bought an already registered property the original deeds don't come with it as you are relying on the registered details. Often the original deeds are kept by the seller but sometimes they may hand them over if they have them.
So the only way you are likely to ever had the original deeds is if your= were the first registered owner and your lender or your solicitor hung on to them. We know the lender didn't so worth asking the solicitor although 12+ years on I suspect they won't have any records now to help“Official Company Representative
I am the official company representative of Land Registry. MSE has given permission for me to post in response to queries about the company, so that I can help solve issues. You can see my name on the companies with permission to post list. I am not allowed to tout for business at all. If you believe I am please report it to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com This does NOT imply any form of approval of my company or its products by MSE"0 -
...Now then, where are my deeds? ....
Is a question that you should have asked your solicitors 12 years ago.:)..The mortgage provider says that they don't have them and that if I want a copy of them I have to contact the Land Registry. But where are the originals?...
Then you have registered title, the old paper deeds don't matter, and either some previous owner has them stuffed in a drawer somewhere, or (most likely) they have been thrown away.0 -
Why do you want the deeds?Mortgage Free thanks to ill-health retirement0

More likely the OP believes they have some value, such as proving he owns the house, which they don't.0 -
I actually ended up with the deeds to our house shortly after we took out the mortgage0

Thanks everyone...I was led to believe that the deeds were held by the lender until the mortgage was paid in full, obviously that is not the case (any more). No problem then...just more paperwork to have been worried about (until the Land Registry gets hacked that is!). Thanks again...0
