4-7 Years Before Retiring....
Comments

We meant for my Oh to go in 2018 and me in 2020. I only work pt and am younger. We have been investing and saving for a few years and have good pensions. Quotes for early retirement for DH arrived Monday and we have decided we can afford for him to go this October. 6 months and counting. Only question is how long before I can join him:)I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free Wannabe, Budgeting and Banking and Savings and Investment boards. Yes, I'm 50 and would like to be out of work for ever by at least 57.
Spreadsheet is up and running for me and OH. Lots of numbers, in real terms, pretty charts to show gross and net income. Lots of planning going on to work around the changes which get thrown in the mix each year, budget by budget.
Last few months were occupied in obtaining our overseas pensions funds and getting them reinvested in the UK, getting to grips with annual allowances, carry forward etc, and understanding the new annual allowance taper for my OH. But this is a new (tax) year..... next job is to reassess spending in advance of choosing my flexible benefits and new pension contribution for the year by the end of May. Taper affects who does what in terms of pensions.0 -
Some very generous employer contributions mentioned here. The maximum mine will pay is 2.5%.
My contribution is 23%.0 -
As the saying goes Money aint Everything. Still I am happy with what I have got and will be getting, Just give me some Sunshine and a few bottles of beer and I will bow out Happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 56 years young in May.0

We should find a count down gadget to put on our desktops!
Plenty of countdown apps for iPod or android around.0 -

I can't believe anyone serious about saving for retirement would own any sort of expensive smartphone - esp not an apple thing. Maybe just play snake on your Nokia to bide the time till you go!0 -
I've got 20 years or so till official retirement age, but I like OP I'm obsessed with planning to support myself when the day comes. I don't trust/understand whether my pension will cut the mustard, at the moment my projection suggests it won't get to a pension amount I'd like. I've no idea whether it'll be enough to live on plus how much cost of live in 20 years will be and I don't trust the government not to more the goal posts.
I'm in FIRE mode, being smarter with my spending to add to the saving pot, my aim is to shave 5-8 years off when I could possible retire so I have the option to retire earlier if I want to (of course I do). My aim to get a pot that will at least support the 4% SWR rule. Like others I have spreadsheet which suggest it's doable.
FIRE = Financial Independence Retire Early
SWR = Safe Withdrawal Rate0 -
Yes I am in the obsessed category.
Planning to retire in 2 years. But there is so much to do and find out about.
Tim hales book, posts by jamesd, firecalc, spreadsheets, hl, you invest, Zurich pension, prudential pension, isas, my companys shares, spending plans, number thread, annuity rates, p2p rates, Santander 123, downsizing, selling or remortgage btl, cgt, life insurance, wills, stocks and shares ISA, state pension, 4% withdrawal, drawdown, 25% tax free, etf trackers, managed funds, exdividend date, emerging markets, bloomberg, moneybox, wake up to money, google portfolio, motley fool, and retireasy.
No offshore funds or trusts, nothing like that.
My wife says she is happy to let me deal with all this as long as she can have the holidays and cruises, significant inheritance for the kids and enough money to pay for a decent care home should it come to that.
Time to fire up another spreadsheet and explore another scenario.......

Sounds like the makings of a song, a la bills Joel's we didn't start the fire or prefab sprouts Albuquerque.
So long as it doesn't get into rage against the machine territory all should be well.0
