The next step is to switch your mindset from 'ok, we've managed to be disciplined and put £1,000 towards our debts so we can take a loan and continue to do the same for another 18 months, I can't wait to have that kitchen' to 'We are able to get a loan and repay it monthly without trouble as it stands, but what if something happened -include here: lose job, get pregnant, need to replace car etc...- and suddenly we can't repay it and get into trouble again. I can't bear the idea of going through this again, so will just save £10k and then we will be able to go and pick our kitchen knowing that nothing can get in the way'.

    Debt-free and Proud!
Thank you everyone, I appreciate that we have been fortunate to be able to get on top of our debts quickly, just starting to pay them off rather than spend on our credit card was a massive mind set change. Our debts were brought about because anything out of the ordinary I put on a credit card, vets bills, external wall insulation, log burner etc. I also was fed up in my job and decided to go and spend 10k on a car to make me feel better (all on credit), then decided I hated the car and my husband still drives it! I also did put a holiday on credit as well. I tried paying bits off and being determined however it was Jan last year when I put plans in place to start in Feb. This was prompted to my husband wanting to go back to uni and there was no way he could with the level of debt that we had.
I suppose to begin with, it is a bit like when you lose weight hard to lose it, even harder to keep it off.
(virtual kick up the bottom) I am in a good place and I am very lucky and I have worked hard to get here, do I really want to go back “there” … hell no
Thank you again all of you.

It does sound as if you have had your lightbulb moment. Paying off debt is the priority and then building up an untouched and untouchable emergency sum so accidents, incidents and illness do not derail you in future is the next thing to do.

As for the kitchen save up for it. Also, get 'bang for your buck'. IKEA do very handsome kitchens that don't break the bank. There is also a brilliant company called 'Kitchen Restoration' which will reuse your cupboard shells and replace everything else so that you get a totally new looking kitchen for a fraction of the cost. I used them and got a top of the range looking kitchen for a bargain basement price.
