We need to eat all of our food before we get a new kitchen!

Options
Hopefully having a new kitchen fitted within 6 weeks (once ordered) and I'm very aware that I have a completely full freezer (fullsize, 2 adults, 1 x 4 year old) so I am going to have to clearly just eat from the freezer and store cupboard.

That's fine I can work it out.

But what about when the kitchen is being fitted? It could take up to 8 days as the whole thing needs to be ripped out replastered, re-wired and replumbed.

I don't want to eat takeaway every night but I'm also going to only have access to a microwave. I will move the freezer and fridge into the front room but still....only going to be able to use the microwave. I'm happy to prepare some meals in advance but I won't be able to cook pasta. ARGH....I need to prepare and have no idea where to start
Money money money.

You can use one standard cooker ring, and most electric ovens, on a 13 amp plug (but not together!) so it might be possible to relocate the cooker temporarily, or buy a boiling ring. That will do pasta, rice, potatoes etc.

I have my old kitchen sink temporarily plumbed with water and drain flexi-hoses so the unit can be dragged away from the wall for plastering behind without turning off the water. It should really be possible for the fitters to leave you a working sink at least overnight. They'll need water for their own purposes too.

Pasta can easily be cooked in the microwave.

We used a twin-ring camping gas stove, a microwave and a kettle while our kitchen was being redone and cooked our usual meals.

Stand alone oven or built in? Just ask them to plug the cooker in for you before they leave once or twice. Or buy a hob. Or cook a ton of pasta and put it in the fridge it'll keep for a few days and you can reheat in microwave. Borrow a friends/family members oven. Make a platter of sandwiches and have picnic style dinner.

Even with a microwave you can steam some veggies, steam a salmon, and cook some new potatoes. Scrambled egg beans and tomatoes on toast. Omelettes.

Eat out or have take out once or twice.

A week without a cooker isn't that hard if you have a google of recipes. Even ready meals you can get some decent ones. Stop panicking so much.

Also you can just put your store cupboard stuff in a box. You don't have too eat it all. Do a weekly shop with this in mind and you'll be fine.

    Enjoy the new kitchen

I lived with a microwave and a toaster while my kitchen was being redone. Crumpets and muffins; toasted teacakes; hot potato scones; beans on toast; chilli beans and tortilla chips with salsa and guacamole; tins of soup; steamed sponge puddings; pasta and sauce (lazy sauce from a jar); if near shops, microwave pizza and chips; toasties (using toastabags from £1 shop); casserole and dumplings; home made cakes; baked potatoes. Microwaves can be very very flexible! I am sure you can cope well for a couple of weeks.

A mini oven (£30 Argos) a flat toaster (£18 Aldi) and a slow cooker are all you need to produce a vast range of home cooked foods. Just think. The cost of a couple of nights take away food would pay for these. Then sell em on EBay or whatever once kitchen is finished.

I started redoing my kitchen last October ... still at the plastering phase.

I agree, we managed with our slow cooker, electric ring and microwave while our kitchen was being redone. You can buy those little gas camping stoves for £10.

Plan ahead, plan what you are going to eat, have 7 meals thought out. Think about ways of reducing the washing up, you will need to pack up most of your crockery and pans so think about what you actually need to keep out.
