Council Tax Single Person Discount

I don't know if anyone out there has had the same issue as this, but maybe someone will have had a similar experience and be able to advise.
I live with my adult son who is in full time employment. Since he returned from Uni I've been paying council tax that reflects his presence here at home. At the beginning of the year he moved to London on a 3 month working secondment scheduled to return at the end of March. He's renting in London and paying council tax as part of his rent. I enquired with my council whether I would be entitled to single person council tax discount throughout his stay in London but was told that, as it was a temporary stay, I would be not entitled to any discount. This seems unfair to me as he is paying council tax in London and I'm, in effect, paying his council tax here at home. Has anyone else had a similar experience or have any views?

Well documented and I'm sorry to say the council is correct

I have been present at several Valuation Tribunals where similar cases were being heard and the councils always won.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

I agree with lincroft1710, single person discount disputes are one of the things that keep tribunals running and are well covered ground.

What sort of property is he in in London ? - a House in Multiple Occupation ?
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
