Nationwide Account Debt Help

I opened a Nationwide Flex (Cash Card current account) account back in 2010, Just a basic account for credit, debits, standing orders and Direct Debits (no overdraft facility) I used it up until August 2012, I just had a baby and moved house and to my own admission I completely forgot to change address with the bank. The account was sitting in credit of £0.41 then in September 2012 a direct debit for £2.29 from PayPal was attempted and refused which put the account £1.88 overdrawn, The account then was given an unpaid direct debit charge of £15.00…… then for the next 13 months the account was charged £20.00 a month for an unauthorised direct debit charge which takes it to around November 2013 then it was frozen and defaulted in April 2014. The account is currently sitting with an outstanding amount of £274.00. Remembering this account was not in use (no credit or debits) since August 2012 therefore they can clearly see it’s not being used but for a period of 13 months they contained to charge £20.00 unauthorised overdraft fee
It was officially defaulted in April 2014. I think this has been clearly treated unfairly given that the first month it was over drawn was September 2012 but it took till another 13 months of charges and to month 19 to be defaulted
I have spoken to Nationwide who don’t feel they have done anything they shouldn’t have, I explained that I didn’t feel it was fair to charge a unused account for a 13 month period and default it 19 months after the 1st date overdrawn (on an account that didn’t offer overdrafts)
The only reason I have come across this is after getting my credit file
Where do I stand?

Hi,
You say you've spoken to nationwide, have you sent them an official written complaint ?
If not, they won't treat it as a complaint, and you'll get nowhere.
Write to them, explain what your complaining about and why, mark your letter "COMPLAINT".
They then have up to 8 weeks to resolve the issue for you, if they don't resolve it to your satisfaction, you can then get the FOS involved (financial ombudsman service).I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. I had a problem with the usaully fabulous nationwide over a mix up with a mortgage payment. Partly my fault and partly their fault. They placed a missed payment marker on my credit file and were adamant that they would not and indeed could not remove it.
I complained and made it crystal clear that i would be prepared to escalate the matter to the FOS if they refused to remove it. No other outcome would be acceptable to me, and i would complain to the regulator. Once they stopped trying to persuade me otherwise they realised that i meant what they said their attitude changed completely. Banks and BS are judged to a degree by how many complaints make it to the regulator and they are VERY keen to avoid this it would appear. (i also understand that there is a cost of over £500 to the bank when the regulator handles a complaint irrespective of who they find in favour of) so perhaps this plays on their mind.
So my advice, dont get mad and shouty, just be polite and resolute that this will end up with the regulator if it is not resolved to YOUR satisfaction. Do not let them wear you down.£1000 Emergency fund No90 £1000/1000
