Grandparents 'Gifting' to grandkids

Is there a limit to how much a grandparent can give to their grandchildren each year? My mum has 6 grandkids and some money in the bank that she would like to give them them before she has to start using all her savings to pay for care in her older age. Any ideas?

That is true, although I would be concerned that a number of people might be tempted to bump off their elderly parents should such a system come about here.

If a tax on having elderly parents was applied here the number of matri/patricides would barely move, but the number of elderly parents finishing themselves off for the sake of their children would go through the roof.
