Request to previous employer

Quick question (if anyone knows) but can I ring up my previous employer and ask for all of my payslips and my personnel file?
If they say no, can I make them? In the sense of submitting a DSAR and getting everything permitted?
I'm, also, half tempted to throw in the relevant e-mails regarding me from my manager when dealing with anything HR/performance related...but I may save that for closer the time...after seeing how shirty they get.
N.B. - great company to work for but let's just say my manager had it in for me...

you cant make them send payslips i reckon, regarding personal file, im not sure, maybe you can request data they have on you.0

You can submit a subject access request and they will send you what they have. They may not have everything you expect, things can magically go missing in these situations, and when that happens there is little you can do about it.0

Didn't they give you payslip every month?0

This is just my thought, but perhaps you technically can because I think it's in line with the Data Protection Act...isnt it?
So, technically, your payslips will most probably fall under this category as well because it is still information that they (in this case: the payroll department) most probably keep on file. However, from what I can remember, a company should only really keep files on record for as long as they are required, so if you stopped working for this previous organisation a number of years ago then perhaps they have destroyed it.
On a sidenote - If it were me, I would request it in writing in the first instance. The reason why I would do that is because if you telephone them and they reject it on the phone, you have no record of what was said over the phone. So, I would think that if you send an email in the first instance it may be better because even if they decline your request via email, then you have this as proof and you could take it further if necessary.
Those are my thoughts - Other people may approach this differently :A:EasterBun0 -

Payslips would be handy. HR file would be interesting as there were a few problems I had whilst there and wonder how they were recorded.Didn't they give you payslip every month?
Electronically. And yes I did print them off and no I don't have them any more unfortunately.Hi fozzeh

Sounds like sense to me
I only left them a month ago so getting rid of things wouldn't/shouldn't be a worry. I'll drop them a line tomorrow and ask them how they want it submitted and go from there. Just wanted to be sure if I could formally request the info if they said no.0 -

What will you do when you find little or nothing has been recorded?
Probably nothing. Hopefully nothing anyway.
It's more a case of peace of mind or acknowledgment. I know one thing went onto my HR file as a note (mainly because I signed that; phone usage (well, I was finalising a new job) which I agreed with but knew it was another segregation motion as no-one else got it.0 -
