my thumbnail just bent back as i slammed the washing machine shut - ouch!
it has a crack in it now a few milimeters under the skin line.
is there anything i can do to keep it like that until the nail grows?
do 'nail bandages' etc work?

Ouch painful....I've tried lots of things but in the end the only thing that works for me is cut the nail as short as you can, protect nail with a plaster for a day or so, then keep trimming nail back til it grows out. Usually on a finger nail it won't take too long by next week I expect.
My OH always says it's a hospital job when I break a nail.....0 -

Trim it back, and try some nail glue to seal it up to let it grow a little before you have to cut it. I often split nails and manage to ward off the inevitable by using glue which makes it less painful too:)Whether you think you can, or think you can't, you are usually right.0
