Disabled and working

Need some advice!

Basically i can't travel to work, i need to work from home. It's sad we live in a world where employers favour employees who travel etc.

I need flexible hours- my health can be up and down although with the right job i would give it my best go.

My internet researching has been a big waste of time being suckered into sites asking for money and various franchise deals. I am vary of giving address/NI details to random companies who aren't big at all. I am a qualified teacher with a PGDE, not being to travel or leave the house means i can't teach and i have heard many teach online and it's sad that leaves little or no prospects. I am highly motivated and driven, i would love a job that i can my all to for fair financial gains. I would like a job that pays by the hour, maybe like a call agent. But i can't sort the cons from the good ones, any experience.

Would love to hear some stories about disabled people who can't leave home who are able to get proper jobs and do well for themselves. The rates for ESA and PIP are nothing to survive financially these days and i want to be able to reach a higher pay and it's sad because i am disabled i can''t.

Any advice appreciated in advance thank you.

It's not that they favour those who can travel, it's that for most jobs it is a necessary thing. They're not doing it to be mean or because they're behind the times or anything else, it's because they need their employers at the work place else it's impossible for them to do their job.

If you want to teach then teaching online has no fewer prospects than teaching in a school, you're doing the same job just possibly in a slightly different way. Online is not the only option.

As already mentioned, you could become a private tutor from home. You also have the online teaching option.

You could become freelance, but without knowing what you teach or what other skills you have it's hard to give suggestions especially with not knowing how your disability may affect things.

However, say you're an English teacher or just really good at English then you could freelance and do things like proof-reading, maybe audio typing, writing articles and so on. Maybe you could write and publish something.

If you're an arts teacher or really good at art you can create graphics/artwork for people. You could also create your own art and try and sell it. If there are any crafts you can make then you have the option of selling for them too.

As far as the cons go, never pay for a job. You wouldn't do that for any other job so don't do that online either. No legit job should be asking you to pay them money, they're supposed to be paying you. Also check company contact details, lookup company names and read through the site for any obvious errors. If they've made numerous mistakes that's not professional and it's far more likely to be a scam site/company.

I'm going to ask a personal question- why can't you travel? Are you aware that you would be eligible for the Access to Work scheme? This wouldn't just pay for travel, but it could pay for taxis. If it's due to pain or fatigue, then have you tried management strategies such as pacing or grading activities? It's just that I would imagine, even if you are teaching from home- you would need to be able to sit for extended periods (maybe an hour at a time) in order to interact with students online.

I'm disabled and I work from home as a health professional, having set up my own business. However, I do still have to leave the house to visit clients. It is great being able to set and adjust your own schedule according to your health needs.

If you could leave the house to see pupils, then I think mentoring disabled students would be a great job for you. PM if you want more details on companies that do this, as I used to work for one.

  • I did find some genuine work from home jobs which were based around customer services (call centre work), pay was not great but such jobs are generally low paid especially if your just starting off.

If anyone is qualified to teach, as stated here there are jobs you can do from home with distance learning courses.

Many disabled people find education a good diversion from whatever condition they have so its easy to see people working from to educate others who are housebound to some extent.

Most disabled people I know who have worked in wheelchairs, generally have their own transport.

The access to work scheme, as mentioned, is worth looking into.
