Help quell my anger!

 Just have to get this off my chest: a friend of mine was seriously ill earlier this year but with a LOT of support from me and a few other friends and also a family holiday he has made a good recovery. Over the course of his illness, I lent him £770 - didn't want him to not be able to get to work / eat . The good news is I did get back £550 of this money. The bad news is I learnt last night he has gone to Spain Thats 220 quid that I bet I never see again

  • How did he afford the holiday if you had to lend him £770 for food etc??

  • Well if anything you've learnt a valuable lesson! Sorry you lost the money and a friend all in one go.. :(

  • Not sure if this really helps you but... someone on here has a signature that says "If you lend someone £10 and never see them again, then it was probably worth it". I think that principle applies here (albeit with interest)...
  • I agree- I once lent a friend over £700 as he was in deep trouble with his council tax and the bailiffs were on their way. This was before I split up with my ex and was financially ok.

A couple of weeks later he moved away without paying me back or making any agreement with me as to repayment. It had been a heart decision to lend him the money and not a head decision.

Since then I've got into debt (nothing to do with the lending of the money though) and am now slowly getting myself out of it. Sometimes it is frustrating thinking about what that £700 would do to my debt free date, but I can't let myself think too much about it. I chose to lend it to him and made the wrong choice in doing so :(

I feel sad that I was so mistaken in my judgement of him and am not as trusting as I was, but I'd still rather be me. Ok I'm £700 down but I know I did my best to help what I THOUGHT was a good friend. He has to live with himself knowing he ripped off a truly good friend.

  • There's a lot to be said for the old motto : neither a borrower or a lender be.

How different would my life be if I'd realised that earlier!

True enough - I've lost count of the money I've lent "friends" that I'll never see again. On the plus side, you did get £550 back - all things considered, that's actually a bit of a result. I'm sure they'd have had no issues about absconding with the lot.
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
