Digital Downloads

Options
Hi All,

Wonder if anyone can offer any advice? My wife went and purchased a digital download code for Minecraft from the game store. She just asked the cashier for Playstation and got a printout of the code (was told they are non refundable) and went on her way. However when my son entered the code online through the PSN store the code was for PS3 (not PS4) so is purchased and appears in my downloads list but we can't access as we don't have a PS3 (we have a PS4). The store is telling me there is nothing they can do as we've already entered the code onto the system and it's non refundable as explained at purchase) and Sony is telling me it's the stores fault and there is nothing they can do their end. so I am stuck with a download for PS3 on my PSN account that I cannot use. By the way the PS3 and PS4 versions are the same cost

Does anyone know the legal position or any way I can rectify this? or even if I can get the code reset to sell on and at least get some of the money back?

Thanks in advance.

I would have thought that it would be down to you as a customer to also check it was the correct version before purchasing or entering the code. The card should state somewhere on it which version it was for and although GAME would have been in the wrong for not asking which PlayStation you wanted it for, your wife would have seen it and agreed it and if she didn't specifically state which PlayStation either.

If it doesn't state anywhere on the card which console it was for then there may be something you could do, otherwise you bought it after seeing it, entered the code after seeing it and you have been the correct game and content that you purchased.

It may be best to buy it on disk in the future or purchase PlayStation top-up cards, that way you could directly purchase the correct copy through the store and it may work out cheaper, as some websites sell PlayStation top up cards for less than they are worth. CD Keys is a good site for that.
Thank you to everyone who posts competitions and good luck to everyone who enters.

It does state on it which console it is for - down the bottom it'll have either PS3, PS4, Vita or any combination of the three. Problem you have here is what PRECISELY did your wife ask for, if she asked for Playstation then the assistant should have asked for a more precise answer. If however the assistant has handed her a card then it's on her head to check, I still reckon the assistant should have confirmed it before the sale was finalised though!

Have you checked to see if you can buy the PS4 version for a small fee? Several sites claim that those who had the Minecraft PS3 version could purchase the PS4 version for a few quid.

Yep, I think you're all right we are to blame for not checking. The frustrating thing is it seems a different set of rules apply to the digital world. ie. if it was a disk, i'm sure it would of been replaced quibble free. have emailed sony again I suppose you never know!

Technically ambiguity in a contract will favour the disadvantaged party, but you would have to issue proceedings to get that decision made. I suspect that will be much more hassle than it's worth.

It's covered under different legislation I think, ultimately though there's no way the company can do anything about it as well, they cannot reissue another code. The physical disc would have come under Game's own returns policy (28 days so long as it's still sealed) more than anything else.

As mentioned I'd see about the digital upgrade - I know when Minecraft was released there was a small one time upgrade fee, dunno if it's still in play though. (Think it was somewhere round the £3-4 mark)

There was an option to upgrade to the ps4 version if you owned the ps3 version for a fee obviously.

You will have to look in the ps3 store and see if the upgrade option is available.
