'Rules' for roller shutter garage doors

7 years ago when we moved into this house we had an electric roller shutter door installed - seem to remember it was about £700 at the time.
Until recently all has been OK but recently the electrics (NRG Automation) have stopped working so had a visit from a local company tonight with a view to repairing the electrics/motor
He took one look and gave a sharp intake of breath - apparently the 'rules' have now changed and the door itself must have integral safety sensors rather than them being on the frame meaning recent electrics wont work with my older door
Any ideas whether this is real or whether I'm being taken for a £1300 ride for a new door/motor/electrics - albeit quality looks better but I'm loathed to do this if a £200 box of tricks can be changed (which local company refuses to do)

Might be worth a full change if safety is a concern.
Have you tried to source just the electronics yourself on places like ebay and such? Or the OEM?
Then you could probably get a handyman to swap them over for a much lower cost.0 -
Safety no concern for us but apparently is from an installers perspective hence he won't just change the box of tricks because of the 'law'
Been searching for a direct replacement box with no joy so suspect I need to find a suitable electrician/good handyman to sort something0 -
As far as I am aware there are no 'laws' surrounding garage doors (though I may be wrong). But regardless they would not be retrospective and so repairs to existing technology would be exempt. I would run away from this company and find someone who doesn't fly the jolly roger from the top of their van!!!0

Ask the installer!
Or as phil says, find a different guy...0 -
Some safety info here

But if originally fitted with just photo beams should be ok but looks like brand new doors would need safety edges etc
What is wrong with your doors electrical?? control box or motor?
NRG here

I just changed my two roller door controllers. The were PDT seceuoroglide.
One had failed and other had been repaired in past both about 10 years old.
Was quoted Supply & Fit from local garage door installer
2 x Control Panels
2 x Bottom slat transmitters
2 x Pairs optical eyes
Total : £620+vat
If rubber seal required with all above.
Total : £654+vat
Decided to replace only the control units with ANSA Door system control panels bought direct.
Very simple to replace using existing wiring

It would not exempt work to an existing system.
As long as the machine maintains it's original specification it does not have to conform to the new standards. So as long as the machine was supplied in or brought into the country before the changes in the legislation and is being repaired like-for-like with manufacturer approved parts then it will be fine!!!0
