How about Xiaomi Miband bracelet? See some deals for this item.
Seems to be cost effective product.

    Photogenic Debt-free and Proud!
Complete novice to the technology for running, but is it really worth the cost?

I tend to use the Nike app (free) and it records when, where, how far, average speed etc. Is there a need to pay for a watch to tell me this?

Specialist GPS devices do tend to be more accurate, my smartphone app often shows my run deviating significantly from its path. They also have more metrics and can easily be read on the move, but whether it's worth it is down to the individual.
I use my 910 forerunner on my bike and while running - it gives me all the data I want at the time I want it. It's three years old now, and hasn't missed a beat.
Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler.
